Greater Houston German Shepherd Dog Rescue is a 5013 non-profit organization. We are a breed-specific group dedicated to the rescue of German Shepherd Dogs ; and do not knowingly accept mixed-breed dogs into our program. Our GSDs are obtained from public shelters where they are scheduled to be euthanized or they are given to us directly by their owners. All dogs receive the necessary health care, including spaying/neutering and are micro-chipped and then are placed in a foster home until they are adopted. Our dogs are guaranteed a place in our organization throughout their life. Apart from local shelters and rescue centres, searching online is a great platform to look for the right puppy for adoption.
Websites such as Petfinder.org, Adopt-a-Pet.com, and Rescue Me have huge database of pets being accommodated in over 12,000 local animal shelters and pet rescue centres. It is very convenient to search for GSDs up for adoption through these without having the need to visit these places one-by-one. You may visit rescue centres and shelters nearest you and find tons of information about German Shepherds.
Aside from this, most shelters have about 25% of purebreds ready for adoption. So you have higher chance of adopting a purebred German Shepherd. Did you know that each year, numerous dogs are euthanized and killed in the world due to overpopulation in shelters and too little people consider adoption? Remember that when you adopt, you are giving a second chance to these dogs. Pet shelters and rescue centres are dedicated to pet adoption.
Both of them provide a temporary home for these lost, stray, abandoned, and abused pets. They eventually rehome these poor little pets to a new sweet lovely family. Pet shelters are mostly funded and organized by the government. However, rescue centres are run by a group of volunteers, which means they are funded by private citizens through donations. Please do not contact the rescue specifically for puppies - buying a puppy. We are looking for loving homes for rescue dogs of all ages.
Can you offer to adopt a German Shepherd and give it a good home or maybe you could foster a German Shepherd until a new home can be found. German Shepherd Rescue of the Rockies serves the public as a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue of homeless and abandoned German Shepherd Dogs . While providing loving, temporary homes for our dogs in rescue we get them vetted and spend time getting to know them personally so we can place them in the home that best fits their needs. Our goal of German Shepherd Rescue of the Rockies is to find well-matched, carefully-screened, permanent homes and families for each dog. As a community resource, we provide nutrition information, referrals, education, training tips and other services. We are in urgent need of one or two foster homes for two dogs in our care, Kimber & Allie.
Kimber is a 3 year old female Shepherd/Malinois cross, happy & energetic. Allie is a 9 year old female Shepherd cross, happy but less active. They can go together to one foster home or can be split up. Both are housetrained and know and respond well to basic commands. These girls have a high chase/prey drive so a home without cats or small animals is necessary.
Kimber has a foster home available mid September so we only need a temporary place for her. Local Animal Shelters and Rescue Organizations – The best places to start searching for a new family dog are still local animal shelters and rescue homes. Local shelters can be the cheapest and easiest way for you to adopt one of these popular and in-demand GSDs into your own family. The German Shepherd breed are unique, they are loving and fun, can be wilful, but with considerate guidance are wonderful family companions.
You should also keep in mind that these dogs are highly social pack animals. They will want to be around you all the time; this is not a pet you can leave outside or home alone all day long. Before you go to rescue a German Shepherd, make sure that you have planned time and space in your life for a devoted dog companion.
She is a somewhat anxious girl that can be reactive to new people, new dogs or new situations. Her current family adore her and have done much work with her to curb her anxiety. Unfortunately, with young children, their home is just too busy for a dog like Penny to thrive in so they are reluctantly letting us find her the perfect home!
Penny loves "her" people and would be happiest in a quieter home. Fully house and crate trained, Penny is a wonderful companion. She is clever and devoted and would be a perfect companion for a retired or semi-retired single or couple that would enjoy the company & protection she will provide. For months now we've been working on moving in, fixing up, and making life as comfortable as we can in our new Coastal K9 Ranch Kennel.
There is no feeling in the world like the feeling when you know danger is coming your way and there's nothing you can do, no way out. Hope and preparation require a plan, and that's what we are working on, our Evacuation Plan for "Fire Season". Most of us have seen heart-wrenching news footage of horses being let out in the hopes that they could make it on their own, because the fires had moved too quickly to evacuate. And we've seen the families who haven't been able to get their pets out.πΆπ±π΄ . For Coastal, our dogs are our family, and we need to have a plan that allows us to move all of them at once. Unfortunately, in a wildfire, there isn't the luxury of calling in help to come transport our dogs.
We are asking for your help to purchase a used trailer that can be customized to fit all of our dogs at one time, their food, bedding and crates. Not only do we need to get them out of the danger zone, but this vehicle will be our dogs' "Home Away From Home" in an emergency. A vehicle that will provide a safe place for both the dogs and their caretakers while we wait for danger to pass.
We know that new vehicles are very expensive, so we are going for used. Our goal is to raise $18,000 in the next five weeks so we will have the time to purchase, customize and have it ready to go before the beginning of fire season. When and if the time comes, the dogs will be nervous, frightened, so will we. But knowing that we can get everyone to safety, knowing that you are with us all the way, that is what will get us through. We hope to ease the problem of population overflow occurring in many of our shelters, today. WGSR educates the individual on the importance of sterilizing pets and providing superior care. Our rescue dogs are provided with all required veterinary work and are placed into foster homes to ensure they are rehabilitated and trained to be re-homed into appropriate and loving homes. If you're interested in adopting a new GSD, fill out an adoption application and a volunteer will contact you as soon as you've been accepted. Adoptable dogs can only be met by approved applicants, as the primary goal of GSGSR is to find the right family for each dog.
The process starts with the adoption application and a home visit interview, which allows the organization to decide which dog is the best fit for you and your family. Many German Shepherds have been through traumatic circumstances before arriving in a shelter or foster home. If they have been in a shelter for a long time, they've been among a lot of other dogs and may not have received much individual attention. They may still feel stressed, so they'll need some time to adjust. But they'll also be overjoyed to be part of a family again and receiving individualized love.
As with any dog, a rescued German Shepherd will need time to adjust to being a part of your family. As particularly intelligent dogs, they need a strong leader. This means you'll need to start training them and be consistent from day one. If you do not set clear boundaries and expectations, your German Shepherd may want to be the pack leader of your family. The beautiful dogs come into our rescue from different backgrounds. Some may be dearly loved family pets, whose owners have found themselves in such difficult circumstances that they are no longer able to give them the care they need.
However, other dogs will need significant medical and behavioural rehabilitation to give them the life they deserve. Many people across the world post advertisements related to puppies for adoption on the Internet. Many of these people are dog breeders who can train you in taking care of your German Shepherd puppy apart from just selling it. Since German Shepherd is one of the most popular dog breeds, you will definitely get to know of institutions and individuals who wish to sell them through the advertisements.
You can get the opportunity to adopt German Shepherds who have been neglected by people through organizations such as 'Adopt a German Shepherd' and 'German Shepherd Rescue'. Your local animal shelters too may have puppies for adoption. Roxie is an approximately 8 month old female Shepherd cross pup. Adorable Star is a 2-1/2 month old female Shepherd cross puppy. Star was very frightened at first but is rapidly coming out of her shell and loving life in her foster home.
PLEASE do some research about dogs in general and German Shepherds in particular before deciding you want one. All puppies are cute and lovable but if you don't understand the history & purpose of the breed, you won't be prepared for the reality of a German Shepherd or Shepherd cross pup. They are known worldwide for their unmatched loyalty, their endless courage and stamina, and their devotion to their family. BUT they are a remarkably intelligent dog that require a calm consistent leader to teach them manners and we have to EARN that loyalty we all desire. Their original purpose was to provide protection to herds of sheep. As puppies, they are rough, very high drive, nipping little alligators.
Chasing anything is FUN and many Shepherds are "prey" driven which means, cats and rabbits and birds are all "fair game" to your puppy. You MUST be prepared to accept the challenge that a Shepherd or Shepherd cross pup will provide you with or please don't apply for one. A dog should be for LIFE, and all family members should be onboard with expectations of acceptable behavior and responsibility. We can offer guidance and direction but be prepared to engage the support of a professional trainer if you are new to owning a Shepherd or Shepherd cross pup or adult. The amount of effort a person puts into any dog or pup will determine the outcome of owning one of these amazing animals. We are in need of volunteers to help with transport, staff adoption & fundraising events, and care for our rescue dogs.

GSRE's aim is to be the prevention and not always the cure, through offering education on the lovely breed and how to look after these amazingly intelligent and energetic dogs. We not only look to re-home dogs but keep them in their original homes by offering training and behaviour advice.
German Shepherd Rescue New South Wales is a volunteer rescue organisation based in New South Wales and provides homes for abandoned, surrendered and rescue dogs from animal shelters throughout NSW. Due to the current state border lockdowns we are unable to send our dogs interstate. Since the rescue does not have a physical shelter, they depend on volunteer foster homes to care for dogs before they are adopted.
They have several foster homes in Metro Atlanta and the north Georgia area. If you're looking for a German Shepherd specifically, you can look for specialized rescues or a general animal rescue. On general adoption sites like Petfinder, you can filter your search to look specifically for this breed of dogs. Alternatively, you can look for specialist German Shepherd rescues in your area.
These groups look for this breed and mixes who are in kill shelters or abandoned by their owners. When you adopt a puppy, you'll wait to see their personality as they grow up. When you adopt an adult dog, you can get a sense of their personality and behavior after they've already developed. Adult dogs are calmer and can have an easier time getting along with young children. Everyone loves puppies, but there are a number of benefits to adopting an adult dog over a young puppy. One of the biggest is that you don't have to go through the early, work-intensive stages of training a puppy.
An adult dog will already be toilet trained and will be more likely to have additional training. Fostering can be heartbreaking when they get adopted but it is the only way we can save lives. Please click on the Fostering Guidelines for more information about our foster program. Some of our dogs come to us with behavioral issues, so we have found that previous experience with German Shepherds is helpful. If you have the desire and the interest, but are not familiar with German Shepherds, we ask that you fill out the application. Regardless of your experience with this particular breed, our dogs need good foster homes.
Not all of our rescue Shepherds are lucky enough to go directly into a foster home; some have to start in a kennel. Every rescue dog must be in a foster home before it can be adopted. We are dedicated to the rescue and welfare of German Shepherd Dogs.
Our volunteers help foster and adopt dogs to willing homes.
